Parse errors when using typedef

The following program generates a "parse error" on line 3. Using the commented declaration works fine, though.
typedef string MyString;
constant str = (MyString) 4711;
//constant str = (string) 4711;
int main()
{
werror("str: %O\n", str);
return 0;
}
Same thing happens with variables instead of constants, by the way.
